Yes, it was that time of the year again in Germany, from the end of September to mid October people from all over the world travel to Germany, particularly Munich and dress up in Dirndls and Lederhosen so that they can get pissed and look funny while doing it. Not only do tourists love this, but even Germans from other cities who don’t otherwise get a chance to dress up in this way.

In actuality, only a small group of people who live in Bavaria wear those clothes and they’re usually very expensive and high quality. However, this time of the year calls for everyone to suddenly adopt this appearance. Braids, Bavarian hats and a tonne of ‘bier’.

Dinkelacker Beer Tent

Dinkelacker Beer Tent

This year I headed into the Dinkelacker tent where some friends had reserved a table. I was pleasantly surprised to see that our table was upstairs and not in the main area with the rest of the drunken revellers. There was still a great atmosphere upstairs and enough drunken, happy people not causing problems to make it lots of fun.

But Oktoberfest is not only for adults over the legal drinking age of 18. Families with children love it because of the rides, candy and games.

A maß (litre) of beer

A maß (litre) of beer

I managed to drink one Maß (one litre) and pump up my arm muscles in the process. Those glasses alone are heavy, let alone with a litre of beer in them! I wouldn’t want to get into a fight with one of those barmaids…

Pork knuckle (Schweinshaxe)

Pork knuckle (Schweinshaxe)

Traditionally, you would go into a beer tent and drink many litres of beer and eat half a chicken. This time, with my one litre, I also had most of a pork knuckle (Schweinshaxe). Those things are amazing when made properly. This one was delicious with a crispy crust and plenty of meat.

Oktoberfest is first and foremost a Bavarian thing and the biggest one in Germany takes place in Munich, with the second-largest being in Stuttgart. The fireworks yesterday evening marked the end of Oktoberfest here in Stuttgart, but it happens twice a year (in Spring it’s called the Spring Fest) so it’ll come around again soon enough!

Gaming News

Its been a while but the gaming news has been a bit stale and being capped is annoying. So lets get cracking.

Battlefield 4 Reveal

As i and a few friends guessed Battlefield 4 will be coming out some time this year some time and will be revealed at GDC this year this news comes from Geoff Keighley.

The game has been demoed behind closed doors and it just a matter of waiting for the public test.

So far we can safely say that they will follow the battlefield code large maps, vehicular warfare and destruction

Saints Row IV

Dead island Publisher Deep Silver announced the release of volition’s Saints Row IV will be heading to current-gen consoles and PC not the Wii U on August 20 in North America and 3 days later THE WORLD… muah hahaha sorry.

Announcement Teaser Here

yes the last game wasn’t particularly good but im going to give them the benefit of the doubt and hope its good.

Ron Gilbert leaves Double Fine

The creator of Monkey island games and recently “The cave” recently he has announced that he will be leaving double fine.

The news came from his blog Grumpy Gamer in which he thanks the guys and girls at the studio and doesn’t really explain his departure.

“I want to thank all the amazing people at Double Fine for all their hard work on The Cave.  It was a true pleasure to work with every one of them over the past two years.  So much fun.  I will miss them all.  And of course to Tim [Schafer, Double Fine’s founder] for creating the opportunity to come there and make The Cave.

But hopefully where ever he goes he will be free to do anything he wants.

DONE. Justin out.

Revealed next gen

Yes this broke yesterday but im going to say it. The PlayStation 4 has been announced and will be released this holiday season no official dates or pricing but i am very excited.

Sony’s CEO Andrew House said their new console will create…

“experiences that surpass gamers’ wildest expectations.”

Followed up by the lead systems architect on the PS4, Mark Cerny said…

“the development of a next-gen platform started about five years ago.”

and that the goal is

“freeing developers from technological barriers.”

Now Cerny has had a very long history in the video game industry more than 30 years stretching many companies, he also states that platform is…

“By game creators for game creators”

                      And that its architecture is…

“like a PC, but supercharged”

This leads me to believe that game devs have had input in to the new console, the consoles innards were also shown off and the new console will ship with a custom 8-core AMD “Jaguar” x86-64 with integrated graphics APU and “next-generation” AMD Radeon graphics processor capable of driving 1.84 teraflops. As detailed at the event, it will come paired with 8GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory, making it competitive with most gaming-focused PCs on the market. As expected, the system will ship with a Blu-ray drive, built-in 80.211 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, as well as HDMI, Analog-AV, and optical digital output. Sony is giving I/O options a boost with the inclusion of USB 3.0 ports and a mysteriously vague “AUX” port. Each system will ship a “Mono Headset” for cross-game chat and other social features.

yes that’s what it looks like.

there will also be the PlayStation 4 Eye which will have a 1280×800 camera at 60 FPS, a significant gain over the kinect’s 640×480 30 FPS sensor but Sony has yet to go in to full detail.

Recently i have been playing with a question in my head… Should single player games remain offline?

This has happened many times in recent years such as Diablo 3  that needs a constant internet connection to play even in the single player mode now is this really fair to gamers… yes it does protect the interests of the developers to get every cent that they earn t whilst making said game but Lots of us pirate games and i am indifferent  about it.

But those sneaky pirates even with the online only protection, they find a way to work it and get it right so that they can enjoy a game with out spending any money on it.

Say your on a 12 hour flight to Germany from Singapore and you have your laptop loaded with games and your charger and with most flights they will have a power point, you plug your headphones in and get ready for maybe 4 hours of   non-stop Diablo 3 then you come to the sudden realization that you cant level up your Monk another few.

I would like to see peoples responses to this mind numbing question.

If you have been reading my posts i have been writing about the THQ sale of the company and its assets and since i haven’t been able to post everyday i have to do a recap post.

On the 24th of January the U.S. bankruptcy court approved the motion for the auction of THQ’s assets to an assortment of buyers, which was made public the previous day.

The act approved the sale of multiple assets including  Turtle Rock Studios’ game, Evolve (to Take-Two for $10.9 million), Relic Studios (to Sega for $26.6 million), Homefront 2 (to Crytek for $0.5 million), Volition and Metro: Last Light (to Koch Media for $22.3 million and $5.9 million respectively), as well as THQ Montreal and South Park: The Stick of Truth (to Ubisoft for $2.5 million and $3.3 million respectively).

In these sales THQ will receive about $72 Million rounding the company’s assets to about  $100 Million (this would include the assets not in the sale such as Vigil and its Darksiders franchise, that haven’t found a home).

Sales are expected to close tomorrow. And it doesn’t look like its a good day to bounce a check.

Included in the press release was a short note from both Brian Farrell, Chairman and CEO of THQ, and Jason Rubin, President, concerning the finality of the publisher’s closure:

Farrell: “While we had hoped that the restructuring process would allow the company to remain intact, I am heartened that the majority of our studios and games will continue under new ownership. It has been my pleasure to work alongside this great group of people, and I am proud of the imaginative and artistic games that our team has created. Although we will no longer be able to work together with a unified mission, I am confident that the talent we have assembled will continue to make an impression on the video game industry. For those whose positions are not likely to continue, I sincerely regret this outcome and we will be meeting with you over the next few days to discuss the transition.”

Rubin: “I was brought in eight months ago to help turn this ship around, and while I’m disappointed that we could not effect a sale for the entire operating business, I am pleased that the new buyers will be providing jobs to many of our very talented personnel. When we first announced the sale process, I said I would be happy if the company’s games and people had a bright future, even if it meant I did not have a job at the end of it. And I still feel that way.”

I know me and my brother both love the recent Saints Row the third and hope to see the title go further, and we wish the owners of the titles great success with the future.

Assassin’s creed 3 sells heaps

According to a release published by Ubisoft today the latest game in the series has sold 7 million copies which the publisher/developer boasts that AC 3 is the fastest selling game in the company’s history which ain’t bad.

“The reception for Assassin’s Creed III has been exceptional, and this success has positioned the game among the best sellers of the 2012 holiday season. We knew we had something special on our hands when Assassin’s Creed III was launched, and we’re really excited and proud to see how much fans are enjoying the latest installment in the franchise.”

good work boys and girls but sadly for me i have been unable to play the game properly with so many single player games coming out this season.

Hotline Miami sells well

Graeme struthers the project manager for Hotline Miami says that the crazy mass murdering simulator has sold 130,000 digital copies since its release seven weeks ago. The game has been a runaway hit earning plenty of critical praise and even earning the title of “Most Original Game” at this years IGAs .

But apparently the game has been hit by pirates ‘typical’, but the game dev Söderström so he releases a patch to torrenters.

Struthers explained Söderström’s point of view on that front:

“That’s what he’s like. He just felt he didn’t want people playing the buggy version of his game however they got it. He wanted them to get the patch. He basically said, ‘I’m not going to criticize this, it’s a fact of life. It would be nice if guys could find it within themselves to pay for it, but that’s the world I’m in, so you know, you just have to take it for what it is.’”
